JAT TOCs LOCATION. jt.nevai.us or jattoc.nevai.us or google "jat_toc.txt" (with quotation marks included). HISTORY. Let me try to reconstruct the history of these tables of contents (TOCs) of Journal of Approximation Theory (JAT) from my email records and from Carl de Boor's meticulously kept personal records. I think I came up with the idea of creating master database of TOCs of JAT sometimes around 1994 when the worldwide web was just about to explode. I decided to use a TeX friendly approach and created some fussy and stringent specifications how a TOC should look like that can easily be queried by unix utilities such as awk, sed, and grep and that can be converted into html files using automated batch processing by unix tools. Then I started to type up all the TOCs from 49:1 (1987) but I soon burned out and gave it up at 59:3 (1989). In December of 1994, I asked my office manager Marilyn Radcliff and her assistants to continue the job starting with 60:1 (1990) and they ended up going all the way to 83:3 (1995) when the project was halted because of lack of funds. Simultaneously, late 1994 or early 1995, I discussed with Carl de Boor the idea of harvesting the TOCs of all old JATs. First Carl experimented with scanning but realizing that OCR was not yet really practical for such a purpose, he persuaded his sister Elisabeth de Boor to help do this. Carl and Elisabeth ended up typing almost 20 years worth of JAT TOCs. They completed their assignment from 1:1 (1968) up to 48:4 (1986) in March of 1995. Tom Hogan took over the work in January of 1998 and did 84:1 (1996) through 162:2 (2010). Then I started again slaving over the TOCs from 162:3 (2010) and the plan is to continue until 2068 when, hopefully, the younger generation of approximators will kick in. NOTE. Effective with 162:3 (2010) only the first page of the articles is given. In the majority of cases, the last page can be computed from the formula "first page of next article minus one". The reason for the change is that I found it to be too time consuming and inefficient for me to look up the last page of every article. I apologize for the inconvenience. NOTE. The month designation of the published JAT volumes 178, 179, and 180 is erroneous; these TOCs correct the error. NOTE. As long as you don't modify neither this file nor its name in any way whatsoever, feel free to share it with anyone interested in JAT TOCs. Enjoy...
