CHANGING SECTIONS OF A MATH COURSE
Winter Quarter 2006
Read this note if you are not registered for a math course and are trying to get into one that is closed, or if you are trying to change sections of a math course (for example, trying to change from a 9:30 section to a 1:30 section of the same course). THE INFORMATION HERE APPLIES TO ALL MATH COURSES NUMBERED 415 AND BELOW, EXCEPT 345, 366 AND ALL HONORS CLASSES, UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED.
1. Can I get permission to change sections or get into a closed math class now?
- If you have a work conflict,
permissions begin on WEDNESDAY, Dec. 14, 2005. You need a letter from your boss or
supervisor on company stationery. (A note on plain paper
will not be accepted.) This
letter must state your work hours. Take that note and your
current schedule to the Math Course Office, Mathematics Building Room
113, and they will give you permission for a new section as space
permits.
- If you do NOT have a work conflict, permissions begin on MONDAY, Jan. 9, 2006, the beginning of the second week of the quarter. You need to go to the Math Course Office, Mathematics Building Room 113. The Course Office will give permission for all available spaces on a first come, first served basis.
If you follow the indicated procedures, you have a good chance of getting into the right math course, although you may not get your first choice of section or time.
2. Where do I get permission?
Room 113 in the Math Building, 231 West 18th Ave. The instructor of the class cannot give permission.
3. If I can't get permission for my math class now, what can I do?
You may attend a lecture (but not a recitation) that fits in with your schedule, for the first two weeks of the quarter, even if you are not registered for it. In most lower level courses, the same material will be covered in all sections, so you will be caught up even if you later are assigned to a different section.
During the first week of the quarter, you should also attempt to change your schedule using Web scheduling. The Web will remain open through the end of the first Friday of classes, and any seats that open up in Math classes will be given to the first students to make a schedule change.
4. If the instructor says it's OK to get into his/her class, can I get into it before Jan. 9?
No, if the class is numbered 415 or lower, permission does not depend on the instructor; it is all done by the Department's Course Office. Neither lecturers nor TA's can give permission to enter these courses, so do not ask them for it.
5. What if I want to get into a 500 level course, 345, 366 or a honors course?
During the first week, try to add via the web. If the class is not full, you will get in. If the class is full, you will need the permission of the instructor, as explained below.
For courses above 415, and for Math 345, 366, and for all Math honors courses, the instructor is the only one who can grant permission to get into a closed course. You must get his/her written permission on an Ohio State "Course Enrollment Permission" form (available at your College Office, in MA 113), and take it to your College Office for processing.
If you are trying to add during the third week of classes, you must also take the Course Enrollment Permission Form to the Math Course Office in room 113 Math Building to be approved by the Department (note: the Course Office signature is not necessary if the instructor signs during the first or second week of classes) prior to submission to the College Office. For 345, 366, honors courses, and for classes above 415, do not ask for permission from the Course Office until the instructor has given you permission.
