Math Major - Applied Option

GEC Requirements

"As a mathematician, you will be needed ... first to understand the problem and the potential solution; second, to identify the mathematical aspects of the problem; third, to do the mathematical analysis, and fourth, to interpret and communicate the results. This process of understanding the problem and applying mathematics to obtain the solution is typical of the work of an applied mathematician." (SIAM - "Careers in Applied Mathematics".)

General Guidelines

  1. A student needs to have a minimum B average in Math 151-255 and a B- average in Physics 131-133 in order to enter the applied mathematics program.
  2. Students planning to attend graduate school in pure mathematics with an applied mathematics background should take either the algebra or analysis minor, and at least two courses in the other sequence.
  3. Students planning to attend graduate school in applied mathematics are strongly urged to do both the Analysis Minor and the Algebra Minor.
