Graduate Program Information Page
Programs of Study
The Department of Mathematics offers programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Courses of study are available in all of the principal branches of mathematics: algebra, analysis, applied mathematics, combinatorics, geometry, logic, group theory, number theory, probability, ergodic theory, representation theory, and topology.
Research Facilities
The Ohio State libraries have more than 4 million volumes and are served by a campuswide automated circulation system. In addition to the main library, there are eighteen departmental libraries. The Science and Engineering Library serves the College of Mathematics and Physical Sciences and the College of Engineering. This library contains more than 350,000 volumes and currently receives more than 2,750 serial titles. Students have ready access to microcomputers and the University mainframes. The Mathematics Department, jointly with the Statistics Department, is the home of the NSF Mathematical Biosciences Institute (MBI). The Office of Information Technology is a research and service facility that serves all departments, offering short-term seminars and noncredit courses directed to the needs of faculty and staff members and graduate students. The Department of Mathematics is home to the International Mathematics Research Institute.
Financial Aid
Financial assistance is offered to nearly every mathematics graduate student attending Ohio State, in the form of fellowships and/or teaching associateships. Both forms of support carry a stipend plus total waiver of all regular tuition and fees. In 2006-07 stipends for entering graduate students ranged from $16,110 to $16,830 for a nine-month appointment. The work load of teaching associates involves 6 hours per week of student contact, plus preparation and grading. Each new graduate student at Ohio State is encouraged to accept an initial Early Start Summer Fellowship, which carries a stipend of at least $3000 in 2006. Most continuing students receive summer-quarter support in the form of either fellowships or research associate or teaching associate appointments. Graduate teaching associate positions are renewable depending on the progress of the student.
Cost of Study
In 2006, tuition for full-time graduate study was $3146 per quarter for Ohio residents and $7597 for nonresidents. Tuition is waived for students with teaching associateships, research associateships, or fellowships.
Living and Housing Costs
Convenient housing is located on and near the Columbus campus. Two dormitories house graduate students exclusively, at a cost of $412 per person per month. Ohio State maintains an apartment complex for married students; monthly rent ranges from $525 for a one-bedroom unit to $660 for a two-bedroom unit, including gas and water. The Off-Campus Student Center keeps files of available off-campus housing as a free service and prospective students can visit their Web site (http://www.osuoffcampus.com) for additional information. Monthly rent in Columbus ranges from $400 to $650.
Student Group
The Department of Mathematics has approximately 130 graduate students, representing about twenty states and fifteen countries. Over the past four years, the department has averaged twelve Ph.D. degrees and ten M.S. degrees per year. Most Ph.D. recipients seek and find employment in academic institutions, whereas M.S. recipients are employed, for the most part, by business, industry, or government.
Location
Columbus is centrally located in the eastern half of the country, 316 miles from Chicago, 555 miles from New York City, 560 miles from Atlanta, and 404 miles from St. Louis. The Columbus metropolitan area has approximately 1.25 million residents. It is the only major population center in Ohio to have gained residents since 1970. Columbus has a wide variety of fine restaurants and cultural activities. The city supports its own art museum and symphony orchestra and is home to one of the premier zoos in the nation. Temperatures average 73.5°F in August and 30.1°F in January. The average annual precipitation is 36.29 inches.
The University
The Ohio State University, comprising seventeen colleges, nine schools, four regional campuses, and the Graduate School, is the principal center for graduate and professional study in Ohio and one of the leading institutions of higher education in the United States. Approximately 50,000 students are enrolled in the University, more than 13,000 of them pursuing graduate or professional degrees. Each year the University attracts a large number of visiting scholars (about 40 in mathematics) who contribute to the intellectual vigor of the Ohio State community. Many Ohio State faculty members play important roles as consultants to federal and state government bodies and to private enterprise.
Applying
Note: If you plan to apply to OSU, please read this part in its entirety carefully, to avoid any unnecessary delay.
Candidates for graduate admission to Ohio State must do the following two things, before January 15:
1). Fill in the on-line application form (see links below, please choose Summer as the entering quarter), pay the application fee, and submit OFFICIAL transcripts (from EACH of the undergraduate and graduate institutions attended) and OFFICIAL test scores (GRE General, GRE Math Subject, and TOEFL for international students from non-English speaking countries) to the Ohio State Graduate Admission Office, 320 Lincoln Tower, 1800 Cannon Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43210-1174.
2). Please send your statement of intent, a brief resume, all transcripts and all test scores, and three letters of recommendation (on official letterhead) with completed reference forms, which you can download using the link below, to Fangyang Zheng, using the address below.
Please note that the transcripts and test scores sent to the Graduate Admissions Office must be official documents. For documents sent to the Math Department, while transcripts must be official, the test scores can be photocopies. We apologize for the inconvenience of the duplication in document request, but this is the only way we can process your application under the current university practice.
Applications completed at both the Admissions Office and at the Math Department by the January 15 deadline will receive full review. Those completed after the deadline will be reviewed based on our need. So it is to your own advantage to make sure your files are completed early. Files completed after the deadline will also lose the chance of any fellowship consideration.
The minimum standard for undergraduate accumulative GPA is 3.0 (or 75 percentile), and minimum TOEFL score is 550. There is no minimum requirement on GRE General or GRE Math Subject test scores. Applicants who do not satisfy these minimum requirements will be considered only under very special circumstances.
