Dan J. Eustice

Resolution in Memoriam:

The Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University expresses its sorrow upon the death on August 5, 1981, of Dan J. Eustice, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics.

Professor Eustice was born in Detroit, Michigan. on May 3, 1931. He attended Mankato State College from September 1949 to June 1953, at which time he received the B.A. degree in science and mathematics. From September 1953 to June 1955, he was a halftime teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics at Purdue University and received the M.S. degree in mathematics from Purdue at the end of this period. From June 1955 to September 1957, Professor Eustice was employed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration agency in Cleveland, Ohio. In September of 1957, he returned to Purdue University and received his Ph.D. degree there in January 1960. He resumed his position as Research Engineer at N.A.S.A. in Cleveland and continued there until September 1961, when he joined the faculty at the University of Illinois. In September of 1966, he became a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics at The Ohio State University as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in September 1968.

Professor Eustice was a member of the American Mathematical Society and served as problem editor for Mathematics Magazine for several years. He had a creditable record of publication in the area of orthogonal series. His strong commitment to gifted undergraduates was manifest by his dedicated service on the Honors Committee and by the outstanding effort he made in preparing students for national competitions in mathematics.

On behalf of the University, the Board of Trustees expresses to the family its deep sympathy and sense of understanding in its loss. It was directed that this resolution be inscribed upon the minutes of the Board of Trustees and that a copy be tendered to the family as an expression of the Board's heartfelt sympathy.
