Judy Berenstein

Our dear friend and colleague, Judy Berenstein, died Monday, January 24, of cancer.

Judy served in the mathematics department for more than thirty years; first as a lecturer and later in the Mathematics Counseling Office. She was graduated from Ohio State University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics (Pi Mu Epsilon and Phi Beta Kappa) and in 1968 with a Master of Science degree in mathematics. She was recognized for her work as a mathematics counselor by an Outstanding Advisor Award from Ohio State University, an Outstanding Staff Award from the Department of Mathematics, and by an Achievement Award from the Office of Disability Services. Her work was characterised by the deepest respect for students, for the unity of mathematics and for the integrity of this institution. She was a servant in the highest sense of the word.

Judy is survived by her husband Michael; daughter Natalie, of Columbus; son Andrew, of Rochester NY; mother Ruth Seff, of Columbus; brother David, of Brooklyn NY; and four grandchildren.
