Reception for New Math. Department Faculty and Ohio State President William E. Kirwan

At the start of the fall quarter the department held a wine and cheese reception to welcome the newly appointed faculty, including William E. "Brit" Kirwan, newly installed President of The Ohio State University.

Dr. Kirwan received his Ph.D. in 1964 at Rutgers University, where he wrote his thesis, entitled "Extremal Problems for Certain Classes of Analytic Functions," under the direction of Malcolm Robertson. He subsequently joined the faculty of the University of Maryland, where he served as professor of mathematics, chair of the department, provost and finally university president. Dr. Kirwan is the author of 27 publications in the field of complex analysis, served as editor of the Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, and also served on the Council of the American Mathematical Society. The other newly appointed faculty honored at the reception were Assistant Professor Yuan Lou, Zassenhaus Assistant Professors Maxim Braverman, David Pollack, Michael Schlosser and Alice Yew, as well as Ross Assistant Professors Mark Gaulter, Jeffrey Riedl, and Kim Whittlesey.
