Thomas Parker (Michigan State Univ.) and Robin Pemantle (University of Pennsylvania) are both currently active research mathematicians. They have also both been principals in preparing materials for the university mathematics sequence for elementary teachers and have pilot-taught their materials. We believe that this rather unusual circumstance gives an interesting and stimulating, if somewhat special, perspective on the mathematical education of future elementary teachers. After initial presentations by Parker and Pemantle, Deborah Ball will be the principal respondent, from her perspective as a widely respected mathematics educator.
