Arnold Ross 1906-2002

25 September 2002

Dear Colleagues,

Professor Arnold Ross died peacefully today at 4:00 p.m. He was the chairman of our Department for many years, retiring in 1976. In the 1950s he created a summer program for high school students talented in mathematics, and that program continues to run at OSU today: http://www.math.ohio-state.edu/ross/. Ross directed and taught in that program every summer until a stroke forced him to stop in August 2000 at age 94. We had two Reunion-Conferences in his honor, one in 1996 and the other in 2001. In his long career Professor Ross earned many honors for teaching and service, both from OSU and from national organizations like the AMS and MAA.

For further information about Dr. Ross I recommend the article "Interview with Arnold Ross" by Allyn Jackson in the August 2001 issue of the Notices of the AMS.

In lieu of flowers, Madeleine Ross asks that contributions be made to the Ross Mathematics Program.

A copy of his obituary is attached here.

Sincerely,

Daniel Shapiro

Professor and Vice Chair, Department of Mathematics
