Resolution in Memoriam:
The Board of Trustees of The Ohio State University expresses its sorrow upon the death on December 28, 1983 of Norman Levine, Professor in the Department of Mathematics.
Professor Levine was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 22, 1923, and was educated in the public schools of that city. He served as a Weather Officer in the Army Air Corps during the Second World War. He qraduated from Western Reserve University in June 1947 with a B.S. in Mathematics. He received his M.A. degree in August 1948 and his Ph.D. degree in August 1951, both in Mathematics from The Ohio State University. He was a Teaching Assistant here from 1947 through 1949 and an Instructor from 1950 through 1952. Professor Levine then worked as a Mathematician for the Department of Defense until 1953, when he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor in 1956. He returned to The Ohio State University in 1960 and was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1965.
Professor Levine was a member of the Mathematical Association of America. He was the author of over sixty mathematical research papers, mainly in the field of point set topology. He directed more than twenty Ph.D. dissertations. He prepared meticulously both for his classroom teaching and for his coordination of large enrollment courses. He served on every important departmental committee, displaying sensitivity and flawless judgement.
On behalf of the University, the Board of Trustees expresses to the family its deep sympathy and sense of understanding in its loss. It was directed that this resolution be inscribed upon the minutes of the Board of Trustees and that a copy be tendered to the family as an expression of the Boards heartfelt sympathy.
