Using SSH Secure Shell

Configuring SSH Secure Shell for Windows

  1. Click on start, then Programs, SSH Secure Shell, and then click on Secure Shell Client. (This will launch the program for you)

  2. Once the program has launched, there are two ways to get into the settings:
    A. Click on Edit then Settings
    B. Click on the two gears on the toolbar.

  3. Under Host, Settings, Connection, Host Name put in teh following host: math.ohio-state.edu
  4. Click on Keyboard and then click in the empty box to put a check mark by Backspace sends Delete
  5. If you are running X11, then click on Tunneling, and click on the box to put a check mark by Tunnel X11 connections. Note that if you do not know what X11 is, then you most likely are not running it.
  6. Click on OK to exit out of settings.
  7. Click on File, Save to save your current settings as the default settings for SSH

Using SSH Secure Shell for Windows

  1. Click on start, then Programs, SSH Secure Shell, and then click on Secure Shell Client. (This will launch the program for you)

  2. To connect to a host there are two ways to do this:
    A. Click on File then Connect
    B. Click on the Computer Icon on the toolbar.

  3. After you click on connect a box will come up asking you to enter your user name for the default host of math.ohio-state.edu. Type in you username and press connect.

  4. Another box will appear then asking you for your password, type in your password and then click OK or press enter.

Congradulations now you should be connected to a remote host using SSH.


If this connection is going to be used often you can create a short cut on your desktop by saving the current session to you desktop, to do this follow these directions

  1. Click on File then save as
  2. Under Save In make sure the destination is your desktop
  3. Click on Save
