Purpose of course
This is the first course of a three-course sequence. (Professor Susan Goldstine will teach Math 671 and Math 672.) The courses introduce the main ideas of abstract algebra. They are intended to prepare you for the algebra qualifying exam and for graduate study in mathematics.
Most of Math 670 is devoted to Group Theory, beginning with the basic definitions. The last two weeks will introduce the theory of rings, which is the major topic of Math 671.
Required text
Abstract Algebra (2nd Edition) by Dummit & Foote
We will cover Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7, plus section 6.3, and possibly a few supplementary topics.
Assignments
There will be regular assignments of exercises. You should write correct and careful solutions. On four occasions I will ask you to hand in your solutions, and I will check them for completeness, accuracy, and clarity.
Examinations
There will be one in-class exam, tentatively scheduled on October 28. There will be a comprehensive final exam on December 9, from 11:30 to 1:18.
